Chapter 10

Sweat trickled down Gaby’s spine uncomfortably as she stood outside Island Garage waiting for Juan Mendez to diagnose her car’s current mechanical issues. The two-seat sports coupe was her sixteenth birthday present and hadn’t been used much in the years she was in New York. It seemed that the neglect hadn’t been good for it, because now that she was back and wanted to use it, the damn thing wasn’t working. Ever.

She could have gone inside, but then she would have missed the view, and what a view it was! Mike Rivers and Jeff Tanner were bare chested and sweaty as they pulled the engine out of a four-door sedan. The two men were her friend Beau’s fathers, and legitimately old enough to be Gaby’s father, but that didn’t spoil the fact that they were well-made pieces of eye candy. Not that she would have admitted that to anyone in the world, but a girl needed entertainment when she was bored.

Her thoughts drifted back to her men, and she felt a rush of disappointment that she wasn’t going to spend tonight with them. Waking up each of the last three mornings, limbs and bodies intertwined with the three of them had been pure bliss, but nothing compared to making love with them each night until they fell into an exhausted sleep. Tonight, however, she had plans to hang out with Quinn one more time before the baby was born, so the guys wouldn’t be arriving at the shop at five fifty-five to collect her and whisk her away to their condo.

Knowing that, she had decided to close up early this afternoon so that she could get the car thingy handled. It would probably be simpler to get a new car, but this one had sentimental attachments. She removed her sunglasses as Juan headed her way.

“So what’s the verdict, Doc? Will she live?” she asked playfully, and Juan’s smile so like his son Diego’s lit up his face.

“Yeah, she’ll live, but only if we resuscitate her with a new tranny.” He wiped his hands on a rag that hung from his back pocket, and stood between her and the sun so that she could see him.

“A transvestite is going to cure my car?”

Juan laughed. “No a transmission is what you need. It’s not going to be cheap, and I’ll have to order it from the mainland. I can jerry-rig it for now, so that you can drive it, but that will only last a few days max.”

Gaby sighed, feeling a headache building between her eyes. “Yeah, do what you can and get it ordered. I’m not ready to pull the plug on her yet.”

“You got it, Gaby. Leave it for the night and I’ll have it ready by lunchtime tomorrow for you.”

They shook hands as she thanked Juan and then waved at Jeff and Mike before making her way down the block. She tried to think positively, but her attitude was outright dismal. Seeing the sign for Naughty Sprinkles, she
